Apple acquired a startup using AI to compress videos

Apple has reportedly acquired WaveOne, a Mountain View-based startup that develops AI algorithms to compress video files.

The deal was struck several months ago yet has only just come to light since WaveOne’s website closed down. The company's algorithm compresses video files utilizing features of AI and deep learning to dynamically identify which aspects of the video are the most important and therefore should keep the highest level of quality while others can be compressed further without losing significant amounts of detail.

WaveOne claims that its approach is hardware-agnostic and reduces video file size by up to 50%.

This acquisition shows that Apple is committed to developing innovative technology in the field of artificial intelligence, and deep learning for video content, potentially driving the future of high-resolution, low bandwidth video streaming.
