Automation and the Jevons paradox

Tim Paul watched a talk about sustainable AI at Services Week 2024 by software developer Ishmael Burdeau, who mentioned the Jevons paradox. The paradox explains how energy efficiency gains can result in more energy consumption rather than less, seen in various scenarios such as improving road network efficiency leading to more driving. The challenge lies in pairing technological efficiency gains with the right governance, culture, funding, and standards to avoid the paradox and make things better rather than just faster and cheaper.
