Developers increasingly get advice from AI chatbots and GitHub CoPilot rather than Stack Overflow message boards

Traffic to Stack Overflow has been declining since the beginning of 2022, down 13.9% in March on a year-over-year basis.

  • OpenAI's ChatGPT, a language model, has been experiencing exponential growth in traffic, with 1.6 billion visits in March and 920.7 million visits in the first half of April.
  • GitHub, which offers the CoPilot coding assistant built on OpenAI's language model, has seen a 26.4% year-over-year increase in traffic to its website in March.
  • Visits to the GitHub CoPilot free trial signup page tripled from February to March, surpassing 800,000.
  • Stack Overflow has temporarily banned posting ChatGPT content due to concerns about incorrect answers.
  • GitHub's growth and CoPilot's popularity may be related to the adoption of OpenAI technologies.
  • Developers are shifting from searching and posting questions on Stack Overflow to using ChatGPT, CoPilot, or Bing Chat to generate code.
