Fully Automated Deployment of an Open Source Mail Server on AWS

Fully Automated Deployment of an Open Source Mail Server on AWS

AWS customers who prefer to host their own email solutions over using fully managed services like Amazon WorkMail can face challenges running open source mail servers.

In a blog post, Amazon Web Services details how it is using AWS CloudFormation templates to integrate Mail-in-a-Box, offering functions such as email, webmail, calendar, contacts and file sharing.

Amazon S3 is used for offloading users' data and storing backups. The system is designed for small- to medium-sized operations that want a fully featured open source mail server on AWS, with automated setup and high resiliency but minimal complexity and cost.

Several other open-source projects aim at simplifying the setup of a mail server, such as Docker Mailserver, Mailu, Modoboa, iRedMail, etc.
