Google launches PaLM 2, its next-gen large language model

At Google's I/O developer conference, the company announced the launch of PaLM 2, its latest large language model (LLM). PaLM 2 will power Google's updated Bard chat tool, compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT, and serve as the foundation for new AI features. PaLM 2 is available to developers through Google's PaLM API, Firebase, and Colab.

  • PaLM 2 focuses on capabilities rather than size, with enhanced common sense reasoning, mathematics, and logic abilities.
  • It was trained in math, science, and programming texts, as well as 20 programming languages.
  • It offers improved support for writing and debugging code and can solve math puzzles and reason through problems.
  • It features enhanced multilingual capabilities, with training on a corpus of over 100 languages.
  • Google introduced variations of PaLM, including Codey, Med-PaLM 2, and Sec-PaLM for different use cases.
  • A smaller version of PaLM 2 that can run on smartphones was mentioned
