Italian privacy regulator bans ChatGPT over collection, storage of personal data

Italy's privacy regulator has banned OpenAI's ChatGPT for collecting and storing Italian user's personal data without any legal basis. OpenAI has also been accused of violating the EU General Data Protection Regulation and an investigation has been launched.

The ban comes after an open letter was published on Twitter, calling for a six-month pause on the development of the system due to potential risks to society. OpenAI must comply with the ban with immediate effect or face a fine of up to €20 million.
