Passwordless sudo and verified GitHub commit signing with Yubikey

The Yubikey 5 NFC can be used to replace passwords with a simple tap, enhancing security and streamlining workflows for software developers.

  • By configuring Linux's Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) system, sudo passwords can be replaced with a Yubikey tap, removing the need for complex passwords and making development more secure in public settings.
  • The Yubikey can also be used for GitHub commit signing verification, ensuring that no one can author a verified commit as the user.
This guide applies to the Yubikey 5 NFC model on Ubuntu but can be adapted for other systems.

The FAUN watches over the forest of developers. It roams between Kubernetes clusters, code caves, AI trails, and cloud canopies, gathering the signals that matter and clearing out the noise.
